Definition
What are Articles? (Articles क्या होते हैं?)
Articles are small words placed before a noun (person, place, thing, animal). In English, there are 3 articles: A, An, The.
1. Indefinite Articles (A, An)

A / An (अनिश्चित)

Used when we talk about something for the first time or any general item (one of many).

• I have a pen. (मेरे पास एक कलम है)

• She eats an apple. (वह एक सेब खाती है)

2. Definite Article (The)

The (निश्चित)

Used when talking about a specific person, place, or thing already known or unique in the world.

• The pen on the table is mine. (मेज वाली कलम मेरी है)

• The Taj Mahal is beautiful. (ताजमहल सुंदर है)

Article: A
Use "A" before Consonant Sounds
Formula: A + Singular Noun (Consonant Sound: B, C, D, F, G, H, J...)
📖 A book (एक किताब)🐕 A dog (एक कुत्ता)👨‍🏫 A teacher (एक शिक्षक)🚗 A car (एक कार)🎓 A student (एक छात्र)

Example Sentences:

• I have a book.

• He is a teacher.

• She bought a car.

Article: An
Use "An" before Vowel Sounds
Formula: An + Singular Noun (Vowel Sound: A, E, I, O, U)
🍎 An apple (एक सेब)🍊 An orange (एक संतरा)🐘 An elephant (एक हाथी)⚙️ An engineer (एक इंजीनियर)☂️ An umbrella (एक छाता)

Example Sentences:

• I eat an apple every day.

• She is an engineer.

• He has an umbrella.

⭐
The Golden Rule: Look at the SOUND, not just the spelling!
English pronunciation determines whether to use "A" or "An", not the letter itself.
Use "An" (Silent H / Vowel Sound)

• An honest man ('H' is silent, sounds like 'onest')

• An hour ('H' is silent, sounds like 'our')

Use "A" ('Y' Consonant Sound)

• A university ('U' sounds like 'You', a consonant sound)

• A European country ('Eu' sounds like 'You')
