What is a Verb? (Verb = Action / State Word)

A verb is a word that expresses an Action (काम), a State (स्थिति), or an Occurrence (घटना). Every complete English sentence requires a verb!

Subject + Verb + Object
• Ravi (Subject) + plays (Verb) + cricket (Object).
• She (Subject) + reads (Verb) + books (Object).
1. Main Verbs (मुख्य क्रिया)

Delivers the core meaning of the action or state:

• "I eat rice." (eat = main verb)

• "She writes letters." (writes = main verb)

• "They play cricket." (play = main verb)

2. Helping Verbs (सहायक क्रिया)

Helps the main verb establish tense, continuous, or perfect aspect:

• BE: am, is, are, was, were ("I am studying.")

• DO: do, does, did ("Did you go?")

• HAVE: have, has, had ("She has finished.")

3. Action vs. State Verbs

Action Verbs (Physical / Mental):

• Physical: run, eat, drive, cook, play

• Mental: think, remember, understand, decide

State Verbs (Condition / Feelings / Possession):

know, believe, like, love, want, belong, need

👉 "I know him." (Not an action you watch happening)

4. Transitive vs. Intransitive

Transitive (Requires an Object):

"I bought a phone." (Bought what? → a phone ✅)

"She opened the door." (Opened what? → the door ✅)

Intransitive (No Direct Object Needed):

"He sleeps." / "The baby cried." / "They laughed."

5. Linking Verbs (Subject ↔ Description)

Connects the subject to an adjective or noun description:

• "She is happy." (is links She ↔ happy)

• "You look tired." (look links You ↔ tired)

• "He became angry."

6. Essential Verb + Preposition Pairs

• Listen to me.

• Wait for you.

• Look at the board.

• Talk to my friend.

• Depend on you.

• Believe in yourself.
