What is Passive Voice? (Object Receives the Action)

In Passive Voice, the focus is placed on the person or thing that receives the action, rather than who did it.

• Active: Ravi (Subject) + writes (Verb) + a letter (Object).
• Passive: A letter (Object) + is + written (V3) + by Ravi.
5 Steps to Convert Active → Passive
Step 1:

Find the Object

"a letter"

Step 2:

Move Object to Front

"A letter..."

Step 3:

Add 'BE' Helping Verb

"is"

Step 4:

Change Verb to V3

"written"

Step 5:

Add 'by + Doer'

"by Ravi"

👥 Pronoun Changes After "by"

• I → by me

• We → by us

• You → by you

• He → by him

• She → by her

• They → by them

❌ by she → ✅ by her

🚫 When "by + Doer" is Omitted

• Unknown doer: "My phone was stolen." (Not: by someone)

• Unimportant / Obvious doer: "The thief was arrested." (by police is obvious)

• General People: "English is spoken worldwide."

⭐ Passive with Modals & Have To

• Modal + be + V3:

"The problem can be solved by Ravi."

"The rules must be followed."

• Have to + be + V3:

"The work has to be completed by you."

📢 Imperative Passive (Let + Obj + be + V3)

• Active: "Open the door." → Passive: "Let the door be opened."

• Active: "Clean the room." → Passive: "Let the room be cleaned."
