What is Direct Speech? (Direct Speech = Exact Words)

Direct Speech reports someone's exact, original words without changing their tense, pronouns, or grammar, placed inside quotation marks (" ").

• Ravi said, "I am tired."
• Hindi: Ravi ने कहा, "मैं थका हुआ हूँ।"
The Anatomy of a Direct Speech Sentence
1. Reporting Clause:

"Ravi said"

Introduces who is speaking

2. Reporting Verb:

"said"

(asked, replied, told, ordered)

3. Reported Speech:

"\"I am busy.\""

The exact quoted words

4 Non-Negotiable Punctuation Rules 🖋️
1. Comma after Reporting Verb:

• Ravi said, "I am ready."

2. Quotation Marks:

• Exact words go inside " ... "

3. Capitalize First Letter:

• Ravi said, "I am tired." (NOT "i am...")

4. Inner Punctuation Mark:

• Full stop, ? or ! stays inside the quote: "Are you ready?"
