What is Indirect Speech? (Reporting Meaning in Your Own Words)

In Indirect Speech, we report what someone said without repeating their exact words. Quotation marks are dropped, pronouns shift to match the perspective, and tenses generally backshift.

• Direct: Ravi said, "I am busy."
• Indirect: Ravi said that he was busy.
• Hindi: Ravi ने कहा कि वह busy था।
The 4-Step Indirect Speech Transformation Shortcut
Step 1: Remove Quotes

Drop " " and add that (for statements).

Step 2: Shift Pronouns

I → he/she, we → they, my → his/her.

Step 3: Backshift Tense

Present → Past (is→was, will→would, can→could).

Step 4: Shift Time/Place

today→that day, tomorrow→next day, here→there.

❓ Reported Questions (Statement Word Order!)
1. Yes/No Question (if / whether):

• Direct: "Are you busy?"

• Indirect: Ravi asked if I was busy.

❌ asked if was I busy.

2. WH-Question (WH + S + V):

• Direct: "Where do you live?"

• Indirect: He asked where I lived.

❌ asked where did I live.

📢 Reported Commands & Requests (to / not to + V1)
1. Command (told + object + to + V1):

• Direct: "Open your book."

• Indirect: Teacher told me to open my book.

2. Negative Command (not to + V1):

• Direct: "Don't talk."

• Indirect: Teacher told us not to talk.

⭐ 2 Cases When Tense Does NOT Change:

• 1. Present / Future Reporting Verb: Ravi says, "I am busy." → Ravi says that he is busy.

• 2. Universal Truth / Fact: "The Earth revolves around the Sun." → The teacher said that the Earth revolves around the Sun.
